87-just-thai-reviewWe are also lucky enough to try new additions to their existing menu especially an heirloom recipe of a Thai food dish that was passed down by the family of their Bangkok Chef. Here’s our 87 Just Thai review after trying their chef recommendations, most of the dishes are pretty pocket friendly with convenient one dish meal that is great for lunch starting from $8. We were also told by the regulars that the $9/ mug draft beer is one of the cheapest beers in the area. The speed of food serving is also brisk and timely, we got a whole spread of Thai cuisine on our table shortly after ordering, thanks to their large team of Thai chefs. So if you are pressed for time during lunch, this is a good place to get lunch in Holland Village. Tom Yum Goong Maprao Oon is one of the must try and also a new addition to the menu if you are looking for something unique in 87 Just Thai Restaurant.

tom yum goong maprao oonHere’s why, we were told this Tom Yum Goong Maprao Oon ($29.90), is a heirloom recipe that is passed down by the Bangkok chef family with twist to the traditional Tom Yum, by the special use of fresh coconut juice, coconut flesh and some secret ingredients to make it more flavourful.

87 just thai signatureThe broth is made with tom yum ingredients, stock, fresh juice from a whole coconut and more. It is served in a claypot with sweet white flesh from a whole coconut. The prawns are specially chosen giant river prawns with head butter and roe in hue of a golden sunrise, which adds richness to the broth. The broth has the spicy and tang of tom yum, but also sweetness with pronounced tones of refreshing coconut juice. This is one of the signature dishes to try in 87 Just Thai Restaurant in Holland Village.

deep-fried-century-eggDeep Fried Century Egg with Hot Basil Pork ($11) – the deep fried century egg with its crisp edges is a good contrast to the soft buttery texture of the century egg. In this dish you get to enjoy a myriad of textures and flavours, the savoury fried minced pork with the subtle aroma of crisp basil leaves held together with the creaminess of a pungent century egg. This is one of the unique Thai dishes, to try here.

fishFrom right to left, Seabass with Thai Spicy Lime Sauce and Deep Fried Grouper with Thai Chilli Sauce. Deep Fried Grouper with Thai Chilli Sauce ($28) is a whole grouper butterflied, drizzle with mildly spicy, sweet and gooey chilli sauce. The loud crunch of the outer crust encasing the moist fish meat is something that will make a fried fish lover’s heart race, not to forget it is a grouper, a premium fish known for its delicate and moist flesh.

seabassSeabass with Thai Spicy Lime Sauce ($29) is a steamed whole seabass in a gravy where the spiciness overtakes the sour citrusy lime flavour. This fish is great for those who can take heat and loves a mean spicy kick of chopped red chilli and shiok pungent fresh raw garlic. By the way, garlic is a great source of natural antioxidants, so load up on these gems together with the fish meat.

beer promotion holland villageIf you are planning for a romantic night out after this, do check out their beer promotion for some cold brews to wash away the garlic breathe. You can chill all day with their $9 per mug draft booze (choice of Singha or Chang beer) in buzzy Holland Village. We were told they are the lowest by their regulars who are chilling there.

They also have plenty of finger food and sides dishes to go with the cold booze. Pandan Fried Chicken($9), Crispy Kang Kong with Spicy Sauce($9), Pork and Deep Fried Pork with Garlic ($9) are some of the recommended to go with the beer.

87 just thai pandan fried chickenPandan Fried Chicken is coated with a KFC like crust with a sweet aroma from the pandan juice in their secret fried chicken flour batter. The chicken is crunchy, moist and tender with a bonus take of sweet aroma from the juice of the pandan leaves. This is also one of the signature dish in 87 Just Thai if you are new to them.

Crispy Kang Kong with Spicy Sauce ($9) is light and crunchy. The vegetable fibers of kang kong is almost non-exist, it disintergrates in your mouth with every munch. These crunchy sticks can get addictive with cold beer.

tom yum oh hoTom Yum Oh Ho ($16.90) is an all in one pot with springy instant noodle, prawns, squid, meatballs and fried meat topped with a raw molten egg yolk that is so sweet. The broth is tom yum soup with citrusy lime with instant mama noodles.
