If you missed the rich herbal broth of JB bak kut teh, you can now enjoy them in Singapore at Xin Yue Lai Jalan Bukit Merah outlet anytime. They use Auntie Yue Lai’s family herbal recipe from Malaysia that is passed down through three generations for this herbal bak kut teh soup. This herbal soup is made with a variety of real herbs, spices and pork ribs for that deep rich herbal flavour. You can smell the herbal aroma in the air the moment you step into their store. The invigorating aroma that speaks home cooked food and comforting dishes.
Just like back home in Malaysia, you can enjoy a variety of local Malaysian style dishes like this unique Dry Bak Kut Teh that is a hard to find dish in Singapore. In this Dry Bak Kut Teh, you can find the signature dark sauce with a mild bitter undertone used luxuriously to create this homely dish. The dry bak kut teh is cooked fresh with an aromatic base of cuttlefish, followed by a serving of braised tender pork belly, okra, signature soup base and topped with their signature dark sweet sauce. The result is a tantalising pot of simmering dark luxurious caramelised pork belly in a spicy sweet savoury glaze.
Here’s Xin Yue Lai Bak Kut Teh review after trying their most popular dishes in house. We love the deep rich herbal broth in the cool air-conditioned dining space. For this herbal bak kut teh, you can also enjoy a variety of ingredients all at once in a claypot. A typical claypot of herbal bak kut teh includes pork ribs, pork belly, pork stomach, pork balls, button mushrooms and tau kee. We got the medium size bak kut teh to try that is good for sharing among 2-3 pax.
The Herbal Bak Kut Teh is also available in 3 sizes from $8.80++ onwards. Since the bak kut teh is served in a claypot, the ingredients and soup stays warm for a longer time while you savour each bite. Enjoy some tender and juicy pork ribs, soft and melt in mouth pork stomach, fatty and buttery pork belly, firm and springy pork ball, umami button mushrooms and crispy tau kee to soak up all the goodness with your food kaki. You can even customise your claypot with more ala carte add-ons ingredients such as enoki, pork kidney, fish maw and razor clams.
You can also get their new 4 pax set meal for $68.80++, available daily till end June 2025 in celebration of Parents’ day, or simply share it among your lunch kaki to enjoy this Xin Yue Lai Parents’ Day lunch deal or just as your dinner choice near Bukit Merah. This 4 pax set meal includes, a medium size claypot of herbal bak kut teh, steamed lala with ginger and crispy garlic, blanched lettuce with shallot oil, caipo crispy tofu, mixed platter of prawn paste chicken wings and fermented tofu crispy pork belly, you tiao, salted vege, braised peanuts, 4 servings of steamed rice and even a complimentary Osmanthus flower jelly with Goji berry.
You can also get their new 8 pax set meal for $118.80++, available daily till end June 2025. This 8 pax set meal includes, a medium size seafood pot, dry bak kut teh, steamed lala with ginger and crispy garlic, blanched lettuce with shallot oil, caipo crispy tofu, mixed platter of prawn paste chicken wings and fermented tofu crispy pork belly, braised pork big intestines, you tiao, salted vege, braised peanuts, 8 servings of steamed rice and a complimentary Osmanthus flower jelly with Goji berry.
For seafood lovers, you can get their seafood pot – which is very similar to pen cai for CNY. This has become one of their signatures with tender abalone braised in Herbal broth, soft, juicy & springy fish maw, crunchy sweet prawns and a handful of chewy briny razor clams.
We are glad that they now also have new carb options such as this Scallion Oil Noodles ($3.50) tossed with shallots, fresh scallion, and crunchy pork lard. The noodles are chewy al dente noodle like wanton noodle but with an umami and vibrant aroma from scallions.
The noodle has hidden umami bombs of crunchy pork lard cubes which disintegrates into an aromatic bite of savoury fatty delights with each bite. This Xin Yue Lai Scallion Oil Noodle is our new favourite dish at this place and is a must try.
Herbal Pig Kidney Mee Sua ($7) has some thick cut pork kidney that is lightly cooked to perfection with a firm bite on the surface and crunchy “medium well” core with a hint of faded pink hue. The silky mee sua with a bite soaks up the herbal broth and is delightful to slurp with the “iron rich” herbal broth made with pork kidney.
Fish soup in herbal broth has a mixture of various cuts of a seabass fish. In this claypot, you can find leaner tender seabass fillet with the gelatinous seabass belly fatty cuts. Enjoy these omega 3 rich bites with a hearty herbal soup base with subtle notes of the fragrant coriander.
They also have some popular homely dishes such as braised pork knuckle that is soft and full of collagen. Ginger & Wine Chicken with a sweet wine flavour in a savoury stew. Lala soup using only live clams simmered with garlic oil and ginger for a subtle oceanic briny flavour.
They also have freshly cooked sides to go with the Herbal Bak Kut Teh such as steamed lala – briny and sweet bites, soft and melty braised pork big intestines, prawn paste crispy chicken aka har cheong chicken wings, fermented tofu pork with gooey chilli and ah ma style cai po fried tofu with preserved radish, not forgetting some crunchy & sweet blanched lettuce.
There are also must have small sides such as you tiao to soak up the goodness of the broth, soft flavourful sweet savoury braised nut, salted vege and braised tau pok.
