NangLen tom yum mama potIn this The Big Tom Yum Mama pot ($128 ) at NangLen, you can find giant river prawn and assorted seafood such as slipper lobsters, flower crabs, tiger prawns, green lipped mussels, baby cuttlefish, dory fish chunks. All these are set atop a bed of minced pork mama noodle with raw egg yolk and roasted pork by the side. The housemade tom yum soup is then poured onto these ingredients with the large pot set on a warmer gel.

nanglen tom yum mamaThey also have personal tom yum mama ($15 – small) that comes with seafood such as tiger prawn, mussels, roasted pork, baby cuttlefish and fish chunks. Tom yum soup is added into the pot with Mama noodle, roasted pork, minced pork, cabbage and egg yolk. A generous amount of coriander, red chilli and sliced green lime makes it extra refreshing, peppery and tangy to tuck into. All these are served with a warmer gel to keep the pot warm while you enjoy the dish.

Nanglen-curry seafood-bucketIn view of the festive season, here’s another reason to visit NangLen. They are adding a new item to their menu – Thai Curry Seafood Bucket – using only Singapore favourite seafood. In this pot you can find live flower clams, flower crab, tiger prawns, baby cuttlefish, dory fish chunks, mussels and sweet corn cobs in a special Thai curry. The sweet Thai curry thicken with soft custardy egg, coats the seafood in a mildly spicy flavour with undertones of sweet red onion, scallions and red chilli pepper.

live seafood clamWe also saw some live flower clams at their preparation kitchen while watching the chef in action. The boss proudly told us that they are using these live flower clams for their seafood bucket. He just bought these live clams personally from the nearby market. The clams are in the process of spitting out the grits, simply by adding salt and chilli into the water which explains the cloudy water.

nanglen reviewsHere’s our NangLen review after trying their chef recommended dishes. The Tom Yum Mama pot and the moo ping are the must try. We also agree that the seafood bucket is great for sharing since it is served atop the laid table for this festive season that is around the corner.

mango-sticky-riceDessert wise, we managed to try their Signature Mango sticky rice as coconut ice cream with corn is sold out. The Signature Mango sticky rice did not disappoint. The attention to details in this mango sticky rice is on point. The sticky rice are served piping hot with cool sweet mango drizzled in a rich coconut cream with crunchy mung bean bits peppered atop them. The mung bean provides a nice texture to the springy rice and juicy mango.

best-moo-pingLet’s check out their large menu of authentic Thai food prepared in various ways – stir fried, marinated and grilled food. The menu consists of som tum & yum, tom yum mama, starters, mains, desserts and drinks. For starters we tried Woonie’s Moo Ping ($7 – for 3 sticks). I want to give a shout-out to this moo ping, this is one of the best moo ping I ever tasted. It also comes with their signature tangy and spicy Thai chilli to drizzle over these porky gems.

grill moo pingSince it is so good, we have to give it more air time. The moo ping is slightly thinner than usual, served straight off the grill and really hot. The exterior of the moo ping is caramelised and slightly sticky with some deliberate crisp char bits for the smoky kick. Overall, it has that CNY bakkwa flavour but more juicy and tender.

shell fish platterWe saw that they have Thai style oysters ($28 for 6pcs) and Jumbo Cockles ($18) aka sea hum in their menu and we had to try. These are served with the tangy Thai chilli sauce and sweet chilli shallot paste. Do note that they do not serve dual platter like the above but the boss kindly obliged to serve us this tasting set for us to try their quality of the shell fishes so that we can review.

Thai style oysters ($28 for 6pcs), these oysters are served chill with a slice of lime and sauce of your choice. You can either pick the tangy spicy Thai chilli sauce for seafood or the sweet chilli shallots topping which many of our Thai friends love. The oysters are juicy, briny and plump.

nanglen saladAs a rule of thumb, som tum are great appetisers to kick start any Thai food feast. Som Tum & Yum means sour, pounding and mix in Thai. The pounding helps to mix and release all the flavours in the ingredient of a salad. Today, we tried NangLen papaya salad with salted egg and corn ($12). The flavours are intense and give us a roaring kick start to our next few dishes. This salad has crunchy shredded papaya that is very crunchy coated with chilli pepper, tangy fresh lime juice and hot sweet corn that is straight off the steamer. For more tang, they also added tomato, string bean for crunchy and sakura shrimp hae bee for umami in additional to the savoury fish sauce. The roasted nuts and grainy salted egg elevates the flavour more!

porkStir fried holy basil with roasted pork ($15) is sliced roasted pork stir fried with basil and string beans. The roasted pork now takes on the sweet minty flavours of the basil with some crunch from the sweet string beans, best enjoyed with a serving of steamed rice.
