Congratulations to the last S’pore Idol. Both are winners. I’m glad that S’pore made the right choice. But I’m also surprised that with Paul and Joakim around during the last few rounds, Hady still managed to outlast them. Hehe.

the judges did not look happy for the simple reason that they really wanted Jonathan to win…
i mean im not being controversial or biased cause i don’t support any of the two~ but honestly though i really feel that Jon can sell sooooo much more albums than Hady can- that explains Ken’s moody face cos hype records will sell peanuts with Hady.
Jon has soooo much more mass appeal; the taiwanese, malaysians, chinese, hongkies, not forgetting singaporeans will love him- but what to do.. his fans just didnt vote enough…
hady i wish you all the best though..
from now on you’d definately need it ~ otherwise you’ll just be the next spokesperson for CHEERS…

well the results out…the only thing I don’t like is the coming single song…”you give me wings”…it sound so patriotic that I am not surprise that it was supposed to be the next SG National Day song…probably it is – and Hady got to sing it in a patriotic video clip for NDP 2007 – looks like mediacorp got the chance to “kill 2 birds with one stone”!

I really disagree that Jon (no disrespect to Jon, I personally think he did really well) should win on the basis that he would sell more albums to the likes of the Taiwanese, Japanese etc..If that is main intent of the contest, then entries should be restricted to people who would appeal to such markets; we shouldnt call this Singapore Idol then, perhaps Singapore Idol for Taiwan. I dont disagree that the Singapore market is small but personally whether the winner sells tonnes of CDs or not is secondary. Its no secret that any winner would probably end up endorsing some drink product or appear in a 711 ad, instead of reaping their album sales. Rather than poking fun, we really have ourselves to blame for not supporting local music enough (to be specific by purchasing their CDs). In essence, Singapore Idol gives bona fide singers and wannabes a platform to showcase their talents. And I think that everybody would agree that both contestants are bona fide singers who did local music proud in terms of the standard of singing that they dished out on finals night. Well I hope that the glum judge(s) would chill out and realise that Hady really worked his socks off; he deserves his title.

Well they keep saying its a singing competition, but is it really? It’s an idol competition, a search for someone who can be the object of affection.

While Hady has better vocal range and versatility as a recording artist i don’t think that that is very important. Many recording artists ‘specialise’ in a particular genre, and Hady’s product is not very different from many existing artists. Jon has more charisma, is better looking and has a more distinctive tone and edge to his voice, which will enable him to better differentiate his product. They both have talent, but Jon is more refreshing than Hady.

I felt though that the original song which was a poppish boyband ballad favoured Hady, as Jon is essentially a rock vocalist who would do well in the pop-rock, adult alternative market that artists like U2, Coldplay, Creed and Matchbox Twenty do well in. I wouldnt go so far to say that Hady didn’t deserve the title, because he has some of the qualities that I’d like to see in an Idol but I thought that Jon would have made the better recording artist. We may well see a Will Young -Gareth Gates situation where Gates is doing far better than Young even though he lost pop idol.

NO doubt singapore idol IS hady mirza. i thought it will be a close fight, but hady scores 70% ( to 30%)of all votes! even more than taufik vs sly(65% vs 35%) ! omg! i can’t believe it! singapore decided that hady mirza does better more than two times of jon! so singapore idol is undoubtly hady mirza! theres no use for jon’s fans to scream and shout.

actually i thought that hady should win…. i’ve known that the votes of hady always seem to be more than jon. in the first spectaculars(top 12 show), jon has the best performance of all 12. but he is the lowest 3 votes( that time mediacorp says that it is lowest three votes, before they started putting the fantastic singers in the danger group). omg! singapore thinks that hady do so much better than jon, even more than taufik to sly!

Yes, that’s the sad reality. Remember Jacintha said Jon will be the next Singapore Idol in her final comments and she teared when Hady won instead? Why can’t she be happy for Hady?

Everyone thought Sly can fly in HK and Taiwan but did he? Is Hady judged simply because he’s a minority? Nonetheless, Hady’s landslide victory shows that there are still many un-racist Singaporeans.

jon fans always say how much they vote . many fans says that hady will not win, but hady win 70% votes., i think the jon fans on this blog jus talk and never vote….. i dun think that its all hady fans vote for him to b 70%. although i thought hady wins almost every spectacular in vote to jon. mus be the singaporeans who vote. singaporeans won’t come in this forum and say hady go geylang. but its impossible to get 70% vote only on hady’s fans. singaporeans mus have voted.

it seems that jon fans are all people who badmouthed and uncivilised. some even say that jon should win cos he is chinese. this sentence may b true, but now it is singapore idol and as singaporeans we are racial harmony. those who say this sentence that jon should win cos he’s chinese are not fit to b singaporeans! so they should not b voting for singapore idol.

but quite shock of the fact that hady and jon is 70% to 30% as their talents are quite close. it should b a fierce competition. taufik and sly only 62% to 38% when taufik is so much better than sly. looks like singaporeans think that hady deserves to win much much more than jon. i heard my sister classmates and all voting for jon but not for hady, but it turns out opposite

but the fact that 70% singapore votes goes to hady and what does that means? that singaporeans is not “bious”. cameraman also surprised because earlier, jonathon said “thank you singapore for making my dreams come true”. Cameraman must be thinking.. so it’s Jonathon, thats why focus on jon.

    1. judge, nobody said hady go geylang. you misquoted. and it was a meant as a joke and nothing offensive. the same person said something about jonathon recording the awful wing song also in case you didn’t noticed. so it’s just poking fun at the TWO of them. why do you have to keep focusing on the negative?

    2. don’t call jon’s fans uncivilized. how would you like it if we call hady’s fan uncivilized?

    3. does it occur to you that they might like jonathon because a. x-factor b. they consider him idol material

    4. perhaps they did want jonathon because they want a turn to have a chinese singapore idol also. imagine if taufik hadn’t got it the first time and a chinese got it, you may say that “aiya, why chinese idol again this time round. why not hady? get the rationale? maybe it has nothing to do with racial prejudice but just a matter of wanting to be part of it too. hope you understand what i am saying.

    Ok I’m not a kid but…

Being a Chinese myself, I guess in general observation, I think Malays have more powerful and interesting vocals. And Hady proved that. Not being racist or anything here, just that looking at the music industry in M’sia for example, I’ve heard Malay singers who sound really good… without trying to say that singers from the other races are not marketed as well as the Malays.

I welcome constructive comments. Please prove me wrong if you can find 10 or more Chinese artistes in general who have monster voices like Michael Bolton or Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.

there’s a totally different set of standards when judging how good a chinese singer is. maybe it’s style, poise, new ways of delivering a song, belting vocals like whitney and michael bolton are appreciated but not necessarily preferred. it’s always evolving. just like japanese music, their standards are quirky and eccentric and most of them sing but don’t sing like whitney or bolton.

well that’s true. the japanese indeed are quirky… i think their albums sell due to very very visual factors such as the looks, trends and what not.

still i guess the SI judges are more pleased with individuals who would challenge their own vocals… contemporary judgement of potential… because that in itself is singing… to have extraordinary vocals that makes your hair stand when the singer reaches his highest note in the chorus, bridge etc. along with good diction, audience rapport, sync, tempo, whatever. and why is everyone thinking about how marketable the next SI will be, when he’s not marketable enough in s’pore yet?

how do you explain paul twohill then? he’s like long fringe across forehead, mumbles from time to time, he didnt have vocals that make your hair stand, but still emerge somewhat iconic. it’s idol. not necessary diction or belting vocals. he didnt win. but left an impression.

how marketable is just pragmatic discussion which belts down to money they will derive. it’s an important question on the judges’ head. you think simon cowell wouldn’t think of that when he make his pick?

paul twohill was just an idol to the teenage girls who only loved him for what he was, reflecting their post-pubescent, adolescent, uncontrollable hormones, emotional selves. everyone knew he couldn’t sing, but because of this voting audience, this pocket of singapore society, he became larger than life.

with my initial topic aside… i was just trying to ask… has taufik refreshed the local music scene? was his impression lasting? i honestly don’t know the answer to whether he has increased sales domestically first… because we’re all doing this because our priority is NOT the money and fame abroad, rite?

  68. bystander said

    am September 28 2006 @ 6:35 am

taufik’s album went into platinum before it came out!by pre booking only. given the chance i’m sure he’ll do good. but he’s been shortchanged due to the fact that they promoted sly and taufik together. even when taufik won. how did sly do regionally? was he a hit? given the right marketing i’m sure taufik would sell more albums. but they are not releasing his second album. his first album was a huge hit so they should have continued popping out albums instead of making him do roadshows. wrong marketing i guess.

and yeah it’s not a race thing.

    I quote Haha:
“perhaps they did want jonathon because they want a turn to have a chinese singapore idol also.”

This is not the “Turn-Taking for different Race to win” Idol or “Politically Correct” Idol. It’s the Singapore Idol where the best talent with the best package should be voted for.

Yes, I voted for Hady but NOT because he’s a Malay. If Paul or Jon were really better, I will vote for them.

Last season, I voted for Olinda and Taufik together. Race factor is the last thing on my mind.

But don’t you think the judges were really harsher on Hady???

P.S. I do think that Jon is cute. He could branch out to acting instead and be as hot as Takeshi. And I see that he is often the one who takes the air time being the mini ‘host’. He may want to trying hosting instead.

  71. NEUTRAL said

    am September 28 2006 @ 5:05 pm

I am not a chinese, not a malay. I liked Jonathan better. I think it is pretty obvious who the better one was in terms being camera friendly. He is is the one with the most stage presence and it seemed likely that many of us wanted to see how he will look like in boths ways, joyful or disappointed since its always shown on his face what he is feeling. I totally understand the cameraman. He also proved all of us wrong by reacting with such sportmanship even though he did not get the title. I agree with Ken when he said that Jonathan’s voice is easily recognisable. Even universally, I doubt there is anyone who sounds like Jon. Whereas i feel that Hady’s voice is a bit cliched. There are many who sounds like him. Even though many did not like the ‘ wings’ song, i prefered Jon’s rendition because it gives soul music a total different outlook when someone with a deep voice sings song like this. Actually sounds quite sexy. So my remarks are not racist because i am not someone of both the races. I just viewed everything in a neutral form and i feel that its time listeners accept a difference because voices like Jon’s are very difficult to come by and once let go, its going to be difficult find another and a total waste. It is also an excellent added bonus that he has the looks and the character as well not forgetting the presence which will make someone want to have a second look at.

P.S Hady’s fans are wonderful. I am sure he is going to make it big too. Loved the Chaka Khan song.

I guess the only thing that matters to me is that both Jon and Hady are already winners going into the finals. Beating the rest of Singapore hopefuls to be in the finals is already and achievement that not everyone can even dream of.

I respected the Singapore Idol contestants from the start. When they joined the competition, they are bringing themselves forward to be harshly critiqued. That is pure bravery in my opinion. Rather than those who stayed at home and says “Joakim sucks” or “Jasmine’s just a pretty face” or “Hady’s a malay who shouldn’t win” or “Jon’s a chinese he should win” or “Paul shouldn’t even be in the top 28 because of his hairdo”. Hope Singaporean can learn from the contestants to go forward and prove the critics wrong instead of just criticising.

Probably the only way to really know how much the contestants are supported is by letting the voters only vote once per person. Instead of one die hard supporter voting hundreds of times for their favourite contestant. Only Once per handphone number or land line. Only once. But then… they won’t garner as much as 1 million votes and the profits aren’t high enough for SI organisers eh?

Nevertheless… Cheers to all SI contestants. You’re all winners to me.

I’m quite surprised that there are still many people who think Paul only has teenaged fans. True, he doesn’t have powerhouse vocals. But so do many others “professionals” in the industry and yet they are huge cos of the way they carry themselves and cos they bring entertainment. They are what the people want. Paul has many of these qualities and this is what attract many of his supporters (both young and old). You’d be surprised at how many adults actually enjoy Paul’s singing and performances.

Whatever it is, congratulations to Hady and Jon for making it to the finals. They both deserved it.

wow this is awesome the forum is getting heaps of hits…
but after reading all these rather tempestous comments made by both sides of fans i still keep my stance that the wrong man won..
but then again i’ve also developed a new outlook to my fellow singaporeans…
man we have turned into a people who are really passionate about our entertainers… -perhaps the media has done it’s role pretty well in all of this…
another point i sorta realized is how immature alot of the comments were; and i’m not going to highlight this out but i guess most of you will realize that there is a pattern to all of these comments regarding to where they’re coming from.
    not pointing fingers here but…
    hahaha…
best wishes to both Hady and Jonathan~!
    p.s.

i dont know what in the world all these comparisons are about..
but i personally feel that there is no way you can put Sly and Jonathan in the same friggin box… no way…
Jonathan has a better vocal disposition and possesses stronger charisma—

    cheers people!
(oh im not refering to Hady’s soon to be sponsors~ =Phaha)

well, even if jon did very well( i dun think he did better than Hady), singapore voted, and seems that singapore’s decision is firmly hady. my frenz i heard are all idolizing jonathan, but the results came out that the people who” voted a lot” get only 30 percent of the vote. well, sadly, i have always think that on popularity, hady is on the much better side and even if hady’s fans work very hard, they could not possibly secure 70% votes. it seems that singaporeans r voting very hard for hady.

i think that hady is more popular than jonathan, even though many comments flodded the forum that jon’s fan’s power is about the same as hady’s. im afraid singapore really cannot accept jonathan as the ultimate singPORE IDOL compared to hady.

hady is like joakim( no offence to hady, so sorry, u and joakim is very different) in the way that u have popularity, execpt for the fact that u sing very well too. hady is blessed with a great voice. hady have the whole package. on looks too. they say jon has the star-image, but so sorry when i see the first piano show, i look at the faces of the men (well my tv spoil so i cannot listen), i thought jonathan can’t make it.

    very stupid prediction.

my prediction are very stupid take a look.

piano show one. (in): terence and norman(its paul and jon)
piano show two (in) : rahimah and gayle(its rahimah and jasmine)
piano show three(in): hady and primero( its hady and joakim)
piano show four(in): mathilda and meryl( its nurul and emillee)

very lame hor? i have stupid guesses.
but the moment i see hady i knew he is one of the very few(like 3) who probably may make it the singapore idol. no offences, the very few does not include jon.

All the complaining is getting to my nerves. It’s giving Hady negative vibes. Instead of celebrating his landslide victory, you call unfair. It just make people like me who voted for Hady feel stupid. Used to think Hady was cool. Not anymore.

C’mon. Don’t feel stupid! You voted for who YOU think should be the Singapore Idol. And Hady’s still cool!

Don’t let the comments get to you. Have to be proud of your decisions! Let’s hope Hady do receive a good marketing so as to enhance his great vocals.

And Jon too… What Ken and Dick said was right. He can be a regional star anytime. Again… depends on the marketing people. :)

on a point highlighted by Milly…
i honestly think that Gurmit Singh (and Daniel ONG for that matter as well) does not possess the capabilities/charm to host the Singapore Idol series…
i have no idea what it is that’s troubling him cos he did such a fantabolous job during his tenure in the TONIGHT with GURMIT talkshows…
it just seems that he’s simply too nervous these days…
maybe it’s a live show or whatever, but he looks reluctant, unwilling, and all too uncomfortable doing this show…
and Danny Ong as likeable you are on radio, TV doesnt quite work for you mate – too fake and scripted for “our” liking…
anyways better stop saying negative things—
i have to praise the show in its ability to garner soooooo much support! WELL DONE..
    hahaha..

“Let’s hope Hady do receive a good marketing so as to enhance his great vocals”.

1.The local market is small compared to American market.
2.The local music companies are not as rich as American market.

With that in mind, I think the amount of marketing can just be respective to the above. Hope people will not complain regarding this.

I’m so happy the two of them got into the final. During top 3, i voted for both of them, i don’t want Jasmine to be top 2 sorry to say. It doesn’t matter who wins……. that’s what i thought until I watched the final. Jon gave his best and I loved his 1st and 3rd song (the “Wings” song doesn’t suit him), but Hady deserves to win. And I’m so happy he got the title, but kinda worried he’ll turn into the next Taufik… you know… with those 7-11 stuffs…….

yeah. TOTALLY AGREE WITH ‘ spore idol ‘

    qouted frm spore idol:
” Being a Chinese myself, I guess in general observation, I think Malays have more powerful and interesting vocals.

also being a chinese myself, i feel th same way. SO CAN WE STOP MAKING THIS A MALAY-CHINESE THING. lets be open-minded yea? if th malay boy is more talented than the chinese dude, so bit it laa. aiyooo. jonathan & hady will DO SINGAPORE PROUD. WO AI NI HADY!

    With regards to Bambi’s post:

“1.The local market is small compared to American market.
2.The local music companies are not as rich as American market.”

    Certainly agrred with both points.

But then again, if the record label really wants to push the local music I guess they can do it. Its whether they want to do it or not. Nothing’s impossible.

And also I feel that competitions like SI are just platforms for the organisers to make money. After the Idol is crowned, just like Taufik, his fame and popularity just waned off over time. Of course there are die hard fans who follows Taufik anywhere and everywhere but its only a minority. I don’t think the marketing people are really doing enough to push these talents as they should be.

And lastly, its us. The fans they so called. The voters. The glued-to-the-tv-fans during SI season. When the season is on, we practically voted our hearts out, cheered like crazy. But the feeling never really stay. Its like idolising someone coz he is sooooo hot at that moment of time, or she is sooooo beautiful at some movie. But when another hot chicj or hot bod guy comes along… Bye Taufik! Bye Hady! Bye Jon! I’m idolising someone else… Hee :)

Yes the market is already small locally. And fickle minded Singaporeans aren’t helping either.

Just my opinion. Flame me! Hiakz! :p

Well, regarding Hady and Jon, I shan’t comment on anything.

I just wanna comment that in comparision of Asian and English singers. English singers are wayyyyy better. Somehow why I thought of this is, the English countries are so big that those you pick out must be ultra talented. (Just like you pick fruits in supermarket you pick only the best). Singapore is so much smaller compared to English countries so that’s why there’s none that matches up to Kelly Clarkson yet. I love her songs =D. Their country is bigger so to stand out, the person must be good. Besides, in Singapore since it is small, very hard to find ultra good talent. Ageing population also =X. Hope I’ve offended no one.

Well, I think you can’t compare it like that, because the market is very different. American market is known as a difficult one, and even European musicians often find market in Asia because it’s “easier”. And for Asian talent to make a breakthrough out there, yes, it’ll be difficult. But I heard Anggun (I heard she’s from Indonesia?) make a succesful career in europe.. She must be really good..

and “Besides, in Singapore since it is small, very hard to find ultra good talent.”

Well, apparently Singapore Idol is not really about talent…. *Matilda*…. :(

The last part actually showed Hady’s face and expression when he won, unlike the Live telecast when the cameraman focussed on Jonathan. i agree with Daryl – “Music is less emotive” these days…
RnB/Rap/HipHop is essentially the new pop…
i can’t admit that i’m a very big fan of such genres- but i have to say that it’s due time that performers from SI start connecting to their songs; and for the SINGAPORE VIEWERSHIP to wake up their ideas and vote PROPERLY…
Australian Idol is currently on now and i’m sad to say this- but the talent on show is BREATHTAKING to say the very least…
    i’ll link the youtube urls…
