Fraud of they Year 2005 Award

Lets guess who is the biggest winner? No doubt, TT Durai (Thambirajah Thamadurai), the former CEO of NKF (National Kidney Foundation) is the champion. So if you have no idea who is Durai, he is a law degree gradate that has worked for the government legal service for six years until 1977. He started as a volunteer for NKF and later converted to full time.

So what are the things that happened at NKF that caused public outcry.

Luxurious bathroom at Office
- glass-panelled shower
- pricey German toilet bowl
- gold-plated tap (this is the talk of the town)

Durai’s earnings
- S$600,000 a year plus perks
- 12 month bonus in year 2004
- Earned S$1.8 million between 2002-2004
- Patron Mrs Goh (wife of Singapore’s Senior Minister) described the earnings as “peanuts”

As a result
- Many Singaporean withdrew their donation from NKF
- Most Singaporean lost trust in charity organisation
- Durai forced to step down
- Stricter transparency rules enforced on Singapore charities
- Singapore might have broke the world record by having the most expensive peanut

One more special award goes to the Golden Tap as Singapore’s Most Popular Item 2005.

SINGAPORE IS LIKE A VERY FASHIONABLE AND WELL-LOOKING AND CHIC PERSON. WHENEVER HE OR SHE TAKES OUT HIS/HER SHOES, HIS OR HER SOCKS ARE WORN OUT.
